Format/Recipe for an Argumentative Paragraph:

a). Write one topic sentence. Your topic sentence should state your side of the argument and have three reasons why you feel the way you do. 

b). Explain your first reason in about one sentence.

c). Provide a one to two sentence example that supports your first explanation.

d). With a transitional phrase, explain your second reason.  Your explanation should be no longer than one sentence.

e). Write two to three sentences of a clear and specific example that supports your second explanation.

f). Starting with another transitional phrase and in one sentence, explain your third reason.

g). Give another two to three sentence example that supports your third explanation.

h). Write one closing sentence to end your paragraph.

How to Write 1 Well Developed Argumentative Paragraph
 There are many basic level and/or ESL (English as a second language) writers who need and seek improvement with his or her writing skills; therefore, the paragraph is a great start. One of the most important factors about writing 1 paragraph is staying on topic. With more and more practice in writing well-developed paragraphs, the writer will feel more confident to write essays. One type of paragraph is the argumentative paragraph. The argumentative paragraph allows writers to pick one topic of controversy argue for or against the issue. In short, short this type of paragraph allows the writer to take a solid stand on a particular issue. Your aim in this type of writing is to take a solid stand and pick one side of the issue. You want to convince the reader that you are firm in your argument. Follow this simple recipe for writing a well-developed and focused argumentative paragraph, and I assure my readers that writing and staying on topic is simple. The first step is some advice before writing. Step 2 is the actual format/recipe to follow. Step 3 is a sample paragraph that follows the format in step 2
Instructions:
      1. Take some time to think about a simple element that you want to argue. Once you decide what you want to argue about, be sure to think of at least three words that best tell why you are for or against this issue. Follow the recipe in the next 5 steps for a clear example.
     2 A standard format for 1 paragraph:
               a). Write one very clear topic sentence. This one sentence will be your stand; it will be the side that you pick for this issue. This topic sentence should tell whether or not you are against the issue, and it should have 3 reasons that tell why you are for or against the issue.
               b). In about 1 sentence, explain your first reason.
               c). In about 2 sentences, provide a clear and specific example that supports your first reason from your topic sentence. The example will prove that your argument is strong and convincing.
               d). In about 1 sentence and using a transitional phrase, explain your second reason from your topic sentence.
              e). In about 2 sentences, provide another clear and specific example that supports your second reason. Be sure that your example differs from your first example.
              f). In about 1 sentence and using another transitional phrase, explain your third reason from your topic sentence.
              g). In about 2 sentences, provide another clear and specific example that supports your third reason. Try to use a different example from your first and second. Using different example will allow you to make your argument more convincing.
              h). In 1 sentence, has a closing thought that will seal off your paragraph

    (a) I am against smoking Marijuana because it causes paranoia, laziness, and lung cancer. (b) I first believe that people should not smoke Marijuana because reaching a state of paranoia can cause a person to act irrational, which can lead to a huge mistake and regret. (c) For example, one day my friend smoked some weed, and he started complaining about his heart racing, and he was sweating excessively. Out of panic, he ran down the street crying, and the cops arrested him. (d) Second, Marijuana causes laziness, which prevents people from living up to their potential. (e) For instance, I watched a movie about a guy who smoked marijuana regularly. He became so lazy that he failed out of school, and he was also fired from his job because he always called in sick when he was really stoned and lazy. (f) I am finally against smoking marijuana because it causes lung cancer, which shortens the life of a person. (g) An example of a shortened life due to marijuana is my neighbor who smoked weed every day. At the age of forty-five, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. If he did not smoke marijuana everyday, then he probably would have lived a lot longer and raised his family. (h) In conclusion, marijuana may make some people feel good, but the long term affects for such a short period of pleasure can be devastating; therefore, I am fully against the smoking of this drug.
